2012 Core F IG Errors:

  • Week 12 - Day 4 - Reader Henry Reed, Inc pages 183-202. The question for this day asks about the balloons at the fair, however, this is not read until pages 203-end. Pages 183-202 is about truffles and these questions appear on Day 3 (pages 165-182). We have switched the two questions/answers for our next print run. (12.7.12)
  • EHN - China - Page 3 - Under the Communism heading it asks for key ideas, TENANTS, or ideas of Communism. This should read TENETS. (10.24.12)
  • Update to Week 2 - LA Student Activity Sheet error - answer key CORRECTLY hyphenates contrary and honorary. Instructions indicate that you should not hyphenate a word to leave a single letter alone on a line. Student are not asked to simply divide words into syllables, they're supposed to show where they would use hyphens to divide words across two lines. (10.24.12)
  • Timeline Figures error - There are timeline figure icons for both Sun Yat-Sen and Chiang Kai-Shek, but no figures listed on the figure schedule in Section Three. This is an error in the Study Guide notes. There are no figures for these two characters. (9.27.12)
  • Week 2 - LA Student Activity Sheet A/1 ... answer key incorrectly hyphenates contrary and honorary. Should be con | trar | y and hon | or | ar | y. (9.19.12)
  • Book list - The title Whatever Happened to Penny Candy was left off the IG booklist. It is, however, scheduled beginning in Week 13. (8.14.12)
  • Ancient China Kit - instructions for using were not included in the kit. Warehouse is picking the instructions (one sheet-double sided) with the kit and including it with the order. China Kit Instruction Sheet file is now on the Curriculum Updates page for Core F. (9.27.12)

Language Arts - Landuage Arts F is no longer available as a separate subject. It is integrated directly into the Core F IG.

Book defects, backorders, edition changes, etc.

  • World Book DVD - The 2012 edition of World Book did not come into our warehouse until 6/2/12. All orders for Core F from 4/2/12 - 6/3/12 were sent the 2011 DVD. The result is that many customers are unable to successfully complete the EHN assignments. Any customers who ordered the Core F package, or FCG plus the World Book DVD during the stated time period will be sent a 2012 World Book DVD at no cost. It will take us approximately 10 business days to get these in-house. At that time we will ship the replacement DVDs with a cover letter. (10.11.12)
  • 101 Differences Between Cats and Dogs - faulty binding. Publisher asked to re-bind and replace our stock. All Core F package customers and book title customers have now been shipped the better bound book along with a letter of explanation. (8.14.12)

2012 World Book/EHN Issues (11.2.12)

  • Week 5 - Day 5 - Assignment is to research article on Terracotta Warriors. There is no such article in the 2012 World Book. Please suggest the following links as resources for this assignment: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, PBS, Smithsonian.
  • Week 6 - Day 5 - Assignment is to skim through the Forbidden City article. There is no such article in the 2012 World Book. Please suggest the following link as a resource for this assignment: Forbidden City.
  • Week 14 - Day 5 - Assignment is to read through the Rice Farming article. There is no such article in the 2012 World Book. Please suggest that the customer do a Topic Search for "Rice" ... and look under the sub-heading How Rice is Grown.

2012 EHN Answer Key (updated 11.19.12)

Product Development has now created an answer key for the EHN pages in Core F. They are creating a cover lett to go with it and will print and send both to all Core F IG customers by the end of next week. (Answer key mailed to Core F customers on 11.16.12).

2012 World Book DVD searches (10.25.12)

Core F customers who are struggling to find the assigned articles in the World Book DVD may benefit from the World Book Article Search Webinar found on our YouTube channel. Please feel free to share the link with any customer having difficulty.

2012 World Book DVD Distance Calculator (12.14.12)

For those customers who are having difficulty locating the "Distance Calculator" when using WB on a Mac ...
Find the Distance Calculator by being IN the Atlas … and then going to the top menu of your Mac to Tools. Select Tools … from the drop-down select World Book Distance Calculator.

As a side note … when you install WorldBook DVD 2012 on a Mac, the installation screen outlines all the components it will be installing … including the Distance Calculator.

2012 EHN Answer Key Concerns (8.14.12)

Many customers who have used Core F in the past were used to the EHE Answer Key. There is no Answer Key for the EHN pages in the 2012 Core F. While there are answer key maps, the notebook page questions have been designed to be as general as possible so students can work independently and easily find the answers to the questions themselves, without mom's help. For the majority of EHN assignments we do *not* provide answers for the parent.

2012 Eastern Hemisphere Notebook Pages (5.15.12)

The decision has been made to create "notebook-type" pages as part of the Core F IG. This is how we will integrate the EHE components into the program. The following describes how these activity sheets are designed:

  • These will not be like traditional lapbooks with cut and paste pages
  • On the pages themselves we provide photos of the country or region studied
  • We kept a large portion of the activities and questions from the original EHE, but we have altered and updated them to apply to the 2011 version of World Book.
  • We list 4 main categories on the notebook pages the student can focus on - Overview, Government, People, and Way of Life.
    • Adequate space is provided for students to write their answers on the page.
    • Student will use the provided space to write information they find interesting (from World Book, IG notes or specific activities).
    • There will be something assigned to do each day and instructions in the IG notes will prompt them to do either map and/or notebook work. We provide the space.
  • In addition to the notebook pages, we provide a blank map for the student to write on to add locations and landmarks.
  • We provide a map answer key for Mom of the map locations and landmarks studied.
  • We provide answers to the questions related to the EHL (Eastern Hemisphere Lapbook).

2012 China Kit (5.16.12)

We have updated the China kit for the 2012 Core F package. It is now a 5-day only product. It includes:

NOTE: We have removed the book Ancient China book and the pages of circles for the game Piaji. We have added the content from the booklet of activities which we made last year, to the Core F Instructor's Guide.

2011 World Book on Mac - Distance Calculator (3.13.12)

Customer report: I FINALLY found the distance calculator by being IN the Atlas and then going to the top menu of my MAC (File, Edit, etc.) to Tools. Selected Tools and in the drop down, selected Atlas. The calculator popped up.
OR
Customer report: My son found it by putting the disc back in (we have it loaded it on the kids computer) and opening it again he looked through the World Book User Guide. Double click on that and go through the sidebar until you see World Book Atlas. NOTE: this is different from "Atlas" which is inside the World Book Encyclopedia and what we've been looking through because of the "Atlas" button that looks so friendly and with which we are so frustrated.

The second paragraph is titled "Launching World Book Atlas" and it says "To launch World Book Atlas, double-click on the World Book Atlas Application Icon. The Application is located in the 2011 World Book Folder inside the Applications Folder."

It looks like you either need to go to the folder to open it every time you want to use the World Book Atlas. OR you can (on a Mac) drag the World Book Atlas Icon from the folder to your dock. The friendly looking Atlas icon inside the World Book Encyclopedia doesn't take you to this program--it is completely separate. It just has a lot of the same features.

World Book Tech Issue - DVD region free? (12.30.11)

The World Book DVD is computer software and thus is not affected by DVD regions. It will play on any computer that has the appropriate hardware/software (per MacKiev).

World Book Tech Issue - Mac users running Lion (10.24.11)

  • MacKiev has an update available for download from their site (http://www.mackiev.com/) for users running the new Lion OS on their Mac.

World Book Tech Issues (9.28.10)

  • After speaking with MacKiev (tech support), they have agreed to give Sonlight customers priority when contacting them about World Book issues.
  • Direct customers to http://www.mackiev.com
  • Tell them to follow the links to "support"
  • Choose the World Book icon ... click on the edition you need help with (Mac or Windows) and fill out the form that pops up.
  • MacKiev software team will get back to the customer within 24 hours

The main reason for many complaints that the World Book DVD doesn't work, is the problem with accessing the World Book downloads folder after downloading updates. The system did not allow access to several temporary files without all the necessary administrator permissions.
To solve this, the Downloads folder has to be removed. MacKiev has created a small application that looks for the appropriate folders and removes them: http://softwaremackiev.com/downloads/worldbook/WBWinUpdater.zip

Is EHE still part of Core F? (updated 5.14.12)

While there is no longer an EHE product as part of our 2012 Core F program, many of the best components of that product have been integrated into our Core F Instructor’s Guide. Your students will find compelling research assignments which utilize both the World Book Encyclopedia as well as the Internet. There are also relevant hands-on activities related to various countries and cultures being studied. There will be consumable, lapbook type activity sheets included in the Core F IG.

EHE Student Activity Sheets

We will offer consumable activity sheets from the past two years (2010 and 2011). Customers can still order the EHE activity sheets online. Just include a note in the comment section stating which edition is needed. (2012)
