Challenge assignments

At the most basic level, challenge questions dealt with content that was worthy of the asking, however due to reading-assignment-length restrictions, the answers often fell in parts of the articles that weren’t scheduled, or that later fell outside of the bounds of the reading assignments (or out of the article all together), as World Book revised the articles from year to year. So, in order to avoid the inevitable “you asked this but it’s not in the reading!” complaints, we simply scheduled those questions as “challenge”, so moms could tell what their kids should be able to answer based strictly on the reading, and what fell outside of that. We also feel that having challenge questions in there gave kids a chance to learn how to “hunt” for information they want to know; and to begin to introduce them to some basic researching skills.

EHE Errors

Then Day 2 of week 3, 4 day says: Monumental Moments: #1, Challenge: 2-5. The Challenges on monumental moments aren’t numbered – they are listed by letter, to be copied over onto a numbered line. No one can figure out what the 2-5 is supposed to refer to. The answer lines on Monumental Moments are numbered the way all “questions” are numbered… and the answer to match the lines to are lettered. So the dates next to numbered lines 2-5 are technically the challenge “questions”. Since all parts of the EHE are scheduled according to the question number, we felt this would make the most sense for scheduling, and answer-checking, etc.

EHE/World Book 2007: How to find Korea articles

By the way: These instructions are listed in the Notes for Week 8 & 9 of Core 5, which is where the Korea articles are scheduled, so hopefully that can help customers out in the future, too.

History/Geography 4-Day World Book (CD-ROM) How to find the Korea Articles you’ll need:

  1. Type “Korea” into the main search window. [May need to search for North Korea and South Korea separately - Korea may bring up more on Korean War.
  2. Instead of hitting “enter” on your keyboard or clicking “go”, click “Search by Word”.
  3. In the check boxes at the top of the search panel, select “Articles”
  4. Click “Go”.

You should find all three of the articles on Korea that you’ll need for this week’s assignment listed as options in the search results that are produced. North Korea and South Korea will be the first two search results ... Korea will be the 7th. (Update: This is actually a result of how World Book has formatted its search engine. The hope is that they will resolve this issue for 2008).

Praying Through the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window (8.23.07)

The book Praying Through the 100 Gateway Cities of the 10/40 Window was first published in 1995. It has been reprinted several times, but a revised or updated version has not been published. Though there may have been changes in population and government in some places, the historical and cultural information is correct and enlightening and the prayer points are still valid for today.

Important Update about 2007 World Book Encyclopedia. (5.7.07)

2007 World Book Encyclopedia is NOT compatible with Windows Vista™.

As World Book is yet unable to promise an upgrade for Vista users, we tested the on-line version of World Book with Core 5 and EHE. The on-line version works correctly with those two products.

1) On our website, under Core 5 and EHE computer system requirements, there is an icon for Vista users.
2) The icon will inform Vista users to place a note in the comment section of their order telling us to remove the World Book CD from their orders. We will reduce the price and they will remain eligible for Core Club membership. We will also provide contact information to purchase the on-line version directly from World Book.

Star of Light details 7.18.07

Around 2001 the publisher released a shorter, simpler, modified version of Star of Light. Sarita felt the story was compelling in both versions. The "new" version keeps all the main points of the original story, but takes less pages to do so. Since we don't carry the story as 'great literature', Sarita preferred the shorter version. Customers can easily read the older, longer version. Sarita does not believe they will have any problems with the questions.

World Book 2007 features

The 2007 version of World Book still allows you to highlight passages, and the highlighting will still be there when you return to the same article. It will also allow you to attach "sticky notes" to a passage that will stay as well! These features are available in the Windows and Mac version.
