Book defects, backorders, edition changes, etc.

  • Silkworms - backordered until 11/4/11. This title is scheduled in Week 6 (already passed). If customers contact us about this backorder, please refer them to CR. (10.28.11)
  • Commodore Perry - end of September we were able to obtain copies of this title from other vendors to hold us over.
  • Commodore Perry is now backordered until 11/22/11. Since it is scheduled for Weeks 5 and 7 (4-day/5-day) in Core F, it will arrive much too late for the majority of our customers. We encountered this same issue back in 2008, and at that time created a "re-schedule" for the Japan unit. We will pull that out and check for accuracy, and then provide to our current and upcoming Core F customers. More details to come. (9.14.11)

2011 World Book on Mac - Distance Calculator (3.13.12)

Customer report: I FINALLY found the distance calculator by being IN the Atlas and then going to the top menu of my MAC (File, Edit, etc.) to Tools. Selected Tools and in the drop down, selected Atlas. The calculator popped up.
OR
Customer report: My son found it by putting the disc back in (we have it loaded it on the kids computer) and opening it again he looked through the World Book User Guide. Double click on that and go through the sidebar until you see World Book Atlas. NOTE: this is different from "Atlas" which is inside the World Book Encyclopedia and what we've been looking through because of the "Atlas" button that looks so friendly and with which we are so frustrated.

The second paragraph is titled "Launching World Book Atlas" and it says "To launch World Book Atlas, double-click on the World Book Atlas Application Icon. The Application is located in the 2011 World Book Folder inside the Applications Folder."

It looks like you either need to go to the folder to open it every time you want to use the World Book Atlas. OR you can (on a Mac) drag the World Book Atlas Icon from the folder to your dock. The friendly looking Atlas icon inside the World Book Encyclopedia doesn't take you to this program--it is completely separate. It just has a lot of the same features.

World Book Tech Issue - DVD region free? (12.30.11)

The World Book DVD is computer software and thus is not affected by DVD regions. It will play on any computer that has the appropriate hardware/software (per MacKiev).

World Book Tech Issue - Mac users running Lion (10.24.11)

  • MacKiev has an update available for download from their site (http://www.mackiev.com/) for users running the new Lion OS on their Mac.

World Book Tech Issues (9.28.10)

  • After speaking with MacKiev (tech support), they have agreed to give Sonlight customers priority when contacting them about World Book issues.
  • Direct customers to http://www.mackiev.com
  • Tell them to follow the links to "support"
  • Choose the World Book icon ... click on the edition you need help with (Mac or Windows) and fill out the form that pops up.
  • MacKiev software team will get back to the customer within 24 hours

The main reason for many complaints that the World Book DVD doesn't work, is the problem with accessing the World Book downloads folder after downloading updates. The system did not allow access to several temporary files without all the necessary administrator permissions.
To solve this, the Downloads folder has to be removed. MacKiev has created a small application that looks for the appropriate folders and removes them: http://softwaremackiev.com/downloads/worldbook/WBWinUpdater.zip

EHE FAQ

Most frequently asked questions about the updated (2008) EHE and Core 5 IG:

  • Do I need the current World Book DVD in order to do the current EHE? - No. While we do believe that the current World Book DVD is an excellent product, you can successfully use the EHE with an older version of World Book.
  • Can I make copies of the Student Worksheets found in EHE? - In a word, yes! EHE is a Sonlight product with all the usual Sonlight copyright rules and allowances.
  • Where is the schedule for World Book? - In the Core 5 program we no longer schedule specific World Book articles. The World Book product is updated every year, which in the past meant that we had to update our Core 5 IG every year. By only scheduling the EHE, we no longer have to update the World Book schedule.
  • Where is the schedule for the Eastern Hemisphere Explorer? - The current EHE is scheduled in the Core 5 IG.
  • Is it possible to use the current EHE with an older Core 5 IG? - It is "possible". What it means practically is doing some math. Look at how many weeks are set aside for a particular country's study, then count the number of "exercises" (i.e. Journey Jots, Notable Names) and divide the exercises evenly across the number of days allotted.
  • What do I need to purchase if I want the whole deal? No scheduling or work necessary on my part? -
    • FCG
    • #FH22 (which includes Answer Keys and Student Exploration pages)
    • World Book Encyclopedia (if they don't already own a copy of World Book)

(updated 7.25.11)

Older Edition EHE users (6.7.10)

If there is a customer who would like to use a pre-2008 Core 5 IG with the EHE, they need to:

  • purchase an updated EHE
  • Customer who have purchased the Core F IG are able to request a schedule (put a message in the notes section letting CR know they want an EHE schedule for use with a pre 2008 IG)Customers who have not, are not able to obtain a separate schedule and will have to purchase the Core F IG. [09.02.11]
  • CR will then include with their order a copy of the EHE schedule portion ONLY from the 2011 Core F IG.
  • NOTE: EHE is NOT an Instructor's Guide, and thus does not qualify for the repurchase discount.

HOW TO USE EHE

Research Issues (9.08.09) (Based on a phone conversation with a first-time homeschooler/Sonlight user) When I chat with folks about their frustrations in researching for the answers to EHE questions ... I try to help them see the "bigger picture". I remind them that they are used to a certain type of educational paradigm ... they began homeschooling with expectations based on their own experience. In my classroom experience, when my teacher handed me a workbook or set of worksheets, her goal was for me (and the rest of the class) to find the information and be able to fill in all the blanks. I would suggest that this is NOT the main goal for using EHE (or even for homeschooling in general). While the information learned via the EHE is certainly valuable, my greater goal for using this specific product would be to help my students become more proficient in finding answers (aka research). Yes, the World Book Encyclopedia DVD is our primary resource ... and a good one. But World Book regularly updates their product and re-writes their articles and re-formats their information. Thus, there is no way to assure that you will find every answer via this specific resource. So instead of giving up in frustration, help your student to find other ways to find the answers. Wikipedia is an option (though not a reliable one) ... other online encyclopedias such as Britannica or Americana are better options. Even a simple Google search (under a parent's watchful eye) can be helpful. Again ... the goal is to help the student become confident in finding answers. And if for some reason the student (and/or teacher) is unable to find a specific answer, then don't consider this a failure. Offer compliments to the student for the effort expended ... the various resources used ... creativity in using different search phrases ... and then give them the answer from the Answer Key and move on. ~Judy

Core IG, EHE, and WB schedule - edition issues (updated 9.09)

  • EHE was added in 2004
  • Potential problem - using an IG from prior to 2008 and an EHE from 2008 or later - then no schedule for EHE. No need for WB schedule, so that portion is irrelevant.

Pre-2008 EHE

  • EHE Required the same year's World Book
  • EHE assignments scheduled in the EHE product
  • World Book assignments scheduled in Core 5 IG

2008 and later EHE

  • EHE no longer requires a specific year's World Book
  • EHE assignments scheduled in the Core 5 IG
  • World Book no longer scheduled - research resource
  • EHE instructions give direction for finding materials in WB. Part of the goal is to encourage students to learn research skills. The internet is not necessary, but it could be a useful feature.

World Book Online/Updates (6.24.09)

You have to register your product and you receive one year of free updates (I’m guessing you can continue the feature after that for a price). While you have World Book open and you are connected to the Internet, it will download the updates in the following categories:

  • “What’s Online” Connect to World Book’s Updating Service to download articles and features that keep your encyclopedia current.
  • Articles Updates: Tap into vital updates to your World book: science advances; political, economic, & cultural events.
  • The Month in Brief: Review day-by-day news from around the globe to increase your awareness of trends in our dynamic world.
  • Websites: Use this Internet shortcut to visit World Wide Web sites that provide information related to World Book articles.
  • Back in Time: Travel back in time through World Book’s archives for a contemporary look at what was happening years ago.
  • Special Reports: Download in-depth Special Reports on a wide range of topics.
  • World Book on the Web: Find exciting supplementary features and publications to use for fun and learning, and helpful pointers for parents and teachers.

You do not need these features for the complete World Book or to use it for EHE, they are additional bonus features.
