New Elementary Math 1 (8.8.17)

This level has been discontinued by Singapore Math. The web site has been updated.

Schedule for NEM 1

It depends on your goals. There are really too many problems in the textbook to be able to complete it in a year. Then the workbook just adds to that, with even more challenging problems. There is sufficient material that you could use part of it for an "honors" type of class, and part of it for a regular class. The more problems your student does, the better he will be at math, particularly with the problems in this program, but you have to balance that with how much time you want him or her to spend on math. Think of the textbook and workbook as a resource. How much time you you want your student to spend on math? Is math easy or hard for your student. Adjust accordingly. Earlybird Standards Edition/US Edition

  • Availability
    • Earlybird 1A and 1B US Edition have been combined into Earlybird A Standards Edition
    • Earlybird 2A and 2B US Edition have been combined into Earlybird B Standards Edition
    • These new editions of the Earlybird Standards series will start selling on 4/1. (3.28.08)
    • Earlybird Math 1A and 1B workbooks: We will continue to sell these two workbooks until our stock is depleted. A note has been added to each product page warning customers that we no longer carry 2A and 2B. (4.21.08)
  • Description of Earlybird Standards Edition 4.10.08
    • A student going from US edition Earlybird 1A/1B to Standards edition Earlybird B would only miss some topics on measurement. A parent can have their student measure lengths with nonstandard units (e.g. blocks, paper clips, footsteps), or simply wait until that is covered in the Primary Mathematics 1 US edition (where measuring in nonstandard units is covered from the beginning and so would not require the exposure in Kindergarten).
    • Singapore Math developed the Standards edition to enable the State of California to purchase their materials. It was specifically designed with that purpose. The Standards Editions are aligned to meet the Mathematics Contents Standards for California Public Schools, adopted by the California State Board of Education for grades K-5. Both Standards Edition series have been approved by the California State Board of Education for use in California schools. (Several other publishers have also been approved in California - it is up to the school districts to decide which programs to adopt for their schools).
  • Can we use just the textbooks?
    • [From Earlybird FAQ Yes, the textbook has notes at the bottom of each page with suggestions for introducing and developing the concepts on each page. These suggestions are expanded on in the Teacher’s Guides. For home use, the suggestions may have to be adapted, since they are classroom oriented. Sonlight sells ONLY the textbooks.
    • The standards edition has 'textbooks' - which are equivalent to what we've always sold - and 'activity books'. Sonlight sells only the textbooks, not the activity books because we feel that is too much busywork for such young children. The textbooks on their own have been more than sufficient!

SM Earlybird Kindergarten Math A & B Textbook vs Activity Books 05.24.17 - [great standard response]

When reviewing the scope and sequence of Singapore Earlybird A & B textbooks, the textbooks offer a complete, consumable curriculum for a kindergarten student. In essence, the addition of the activity books is an extra that is both unnecessary and time consuming for the young student.

  • How does the Standards Edition compare to the old U.S. edition of Earlybird Kindergarten? [from the same link above] The four books of the U.S. edition (1A,1B,2A,2B) have been combined into two books, A and B. Topics have been rearranged so there is less repetition and a better sequence of concepts. There is now a review for each unit. The textbooks now include a simple glossary, an index, and some “Math at Home” pages. Some pages were added covering solid shapes, patterns and time (days of the week, use of a calendar). Pages were added to the chapters on addition and subtraction to provide additional material on different interpretations of addition and subtraction (e.g. number bonds, part-whole, counting on, counting back). Numbers to 100 (past 30) and money topics were moved to the last two units, since they are not part of California’s standards.
    • Each workbook contains 10 units
    • Each unit contains 9 lessons and a Review
    • Each lesson is 2 pages long (front and back of one page)
    • Bottom of each page has instructions for parent
    • End of each book has a simple glossary (term - meaning - illustration)
    • End of book contains a Math at Home section of tear-out activity sheets (additional activities for some units)
    • Preface references Teacher's Guide which we do not carry.
              (updated 6.17.08)
  • What manipulatives are used with Earlybird Kindergarten if I want to use it at home with my child? [same link as above] Most of the materials used in this program are simple items from around the home, such as toys and dishes. If you don’t have the specific items given in the suggested activities, it is easy to substitute other items. However, the following manipulatives would be useful to have on hand for the Earlybird Kindergarten:
    • a. Counting discs
    • b. Connect-a-cubes
    • c. Simple balance
    • d. Hexahedron Number Dice Set
    • e. Clock with geared hands
    • f. Optional (called for only once) Tangrams, Attribute blocks
  • The Standard edition made up of two workbooks is intended for a ONE year Kindergarten program.

Primary Math US Edition or Standards Edition? 4.14.08

  • At this time, SM will continue to offer - and Sonlight will carry - Primary Math US Edition (grades 1 and up) so customers buying Primary Math will be able to continue with the same program. We will only carry the Standards edition in the Earlybird level/series.

Comparison of NEM to Saxon high school level

  • Pre-Algebra: Primary Math 6A/6B, NEM 1 (chapters 1-4)
  • Algebra I: NEM 1 (chapters 5-8) and NEM 2 (chapters 1-7, 12-14)
  • Geometry: NEM 1 (chapters 9-14) and NEM 2 (chapters 8-11)
  • Algebra II: NEM 3 (chapters 1-6, 14) and some of NEM 4
  • Intro to Trig/Adv Math: NEM 3 (chapters 7-13) and NEM 4 (chapters 1-4)

This chart is approximate and was provided by Jennifer Hoerst at www.singaporemath.com

Content of NEM 4

  • NEM 4: NEM 4B Textbook provides answer keys to exercises, revision exercises, misc exercises and assessment papers; it is a review of the NEM series, there is no teacher's guide

Here are two suggestions for counting NEM credits - compliments of the math forum:

  • NEM 1 - Integrated Beginning Algebra/Geometry
  • NEM 2 - Integrated Intermediate Algebra/Geometry
  • NEM 3 - Integrated Advanced Algebra/Geometry
  • NEM 4 - Intro to Advanced Math

or

  • NEM 1 = Integrated Algebra and Geometry I
  • NEM 2 = Integrated Algebra and Geometry II
  • NEM 3 = Algebra II with Trigonometry
  • NEM 4 = Advanced Mathematics or Pre-Calculus (Since NEM 4B is totally review, we replaced it with Singapore's Additional Mathematics book to make a more thorough pre-calculus course.)

Geometry in NEM?

NEM does not have formal proofs, and does not cover the language of proofs, but it does have proofs. You can set them up in the tradtional two-column format with step and reason if you want. You can require the students to do the same when they find unknown angles. You can precede this with a description of what formal proofs involve and some examples. You can go through some of the proofs from some other texts. A few weeks on formal proofs is likely to be sufficent. Geometry texts generally include what NEM calls mensuration, or measuring, including area, volume, surface area, arc lengths, etc. They don't usually include graphing, slopes of lines, etc.

NEM Teacher's Guide versus Teacher's Manual

Transitioning from SM to TT

Most of Singapore Math's pre-algebra is in Primary Math levels 5 and 6. Once a student finished Primary Math level 6, he's generally ready for Algebra # I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that a student who finished and did well with Primary Math move right into TT Algebra 1.

What about a young student (5th/6th grade) finished with Singapore 6B?

Do you think your son son is ready for algebra? I mean, not necessarily ability, but maturity? How has he done with the early algebra sections of 6A? I guess there are two options. Go with pre-algebra and let him grow a year older. He may thrive - particularly because TT would be a different program than what he's been doing and because he may enjoy the review without a lot of the difficulty. He may love doing pre-algebra. On the other hand, he may be bored and want to move on. If you think he'd do better to do algebra - even at a slow and relaxed pace - then go ahead and start it. If he's chomping to do algebra, maybe even half-paced algebra would be better than pre-algebra. But you know him best.

Transitioning from Singapore's NEM 1 to TT?

NEM 1 contains a some algebra 1, some geometry, and some other advanced math topics. I agree that someone finishing NEM 1 has not necessarily had a full algebra 1 course and therefore should probably start in TT Algebra 1 and work quickly through "review" sections.

Description of SM Primary Math Materials

You can use the text alone or as a supplement. The textbook has exercises in it, just not space to write down the answers. Kind of like the exercises you’d do in class to review what you’ve just learned. The workbook has additional ‘reinforcement’ exercises, like a traditional workbook would.

Manipulatives for SM Primary Math

The concensus on the Math Forum is that there really aren't any manipulatives necessary for Singapore Math. There are some (a base 10 set, for example) that are nice and may come in handy. There is one point where having a small scale (kitchen scale) would be nice, but you can get around it.

For a first time homeschooler it may be a good idea to recommend a few items -- such as a clock face, interlocking cubes, hundreds chart, and (the most expensive item) base 10 set

HIG description

From the preface of the SM HIG: This guide is meant to help instructors using Primary Mathematics when teaching one student or a small group of students. It should be used as a guide and adapted as needed. It contains objectives, notes to the instructor, instructional ideas and suggested activities, suggestions in a question-answer format, and game ideas, all to reinforce concepts from the corresponding textbook pages, learning tasks, and "homework" assignments. It also has answers and some solutions to all the learning tasks, workbook exercises and reviews, and textbook practices and reviews. The appendix contains mental math exercises and other helps, as well as supplemental pages for users of the third edition of Primary Mathematics. This guide can be used with both the third edition and the U.S. edition of Primary Mathematics. Included is a suggested schedule.

Does the HIG include solutions for every problem? Additional comments --

This is an elementary math series ... once a concept is taught and explained, the answers are the most necessary, not the solutions. I *believe* that solutions are provided when necessary, but I don't believe they are necessary for every problem. For example, in an exercise where the student is adding decimals, it really isn't necessary to provide a solution for every single problem. I'm looking at the PM 4 HIG, a chapter where the student is being taught to subtract decimals ... the *teaching* problem shows the solution, but the following 10 or so practice problems do not. Because they're not necessary. Only the answers are given.

SM 6 Solutions Manuals

SM solutions manuals for 6A and 6B are no longer available. They were replaced by the HIG.

In the past: The addendum was shipped as a few sheets of paper stapled together that came with the solutions manual.

The 6B solutions manual is missing the first unit on Fractions. It begins as if Circles is the first topic, but this doesn't match up with the Textbook and Workbook. The answers to the first 8 exercises are in the Addendum and then it states the changes that need to be made to the solutions manual to make it match with the student textbook and workbook (Unit numbers, page number references, and workbook exercise numbers. The addendum also gives the "labeling" changes from the original version to the US version.

Suggested schedule for combining Singapore Math and Miquon Math

The Singapore Math website suggests a schedule for combining Singapore Math and Miquon Math. The schedule shows what portions of the Miquon workbooks coordinate with the topics of the Singapore lessons. It suggests doing a lesson in Singapore and 1-2 pages per day in Miquon, with Wednesday being an all-manipulative day in which 3-4 pages of Miquon are completed.

U.S. edition

  • Only the U.S. (3rd) edition is still available; the PM edition was discontinued by the publisher.
  • PM version textbooks can be used with U.S. version workbooks, with the parent's modification [the math in the problems was not changed, the content - names of individuals, types of items used in word problems, etc. was changed]
  • main changes were conventions [commas to separate periods, i.e. 1 000 was changed to 1,000]
  • American spelling versus British spelling
  • also, U.S. measurement sections and fractions ADDED - Metric was NOT removed

College Mathematics

Sonlight does not carry the Singapore College Mathematics series. (6.29.07)
