Complimentary Sonlight H book
Email sent on 3/30/16 to 2015 Sonlight G customers:
We hope you enjoyed studying Sonlight G, World History, Year 1 of 2, this past year and are looking forward to the Sonlight H, World History, Year 2 of 2 adventure this upcoming year.
We're writing to let you know that we recently streamlined the G and H curricula for 2016. In the update process, we removed a previously central book, the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, from both programs. In its place, we added the comprehensive Usborne Encyclopedia 12,000 Years of World History.
Because we value you, and because you'll need the new Usborne book to continue your World History studies, we've created a code that will give it to you FREE when you order Sonlight H in 2016.
When you're ready to order Sonlight H World History, Year 2 of 2, simply use this link (http://www.sonlight.com/HC5.html?utm_campaign=Email), which will automatically alert us to include the new book at no additional cost. You may chose either the History / Bible / Literature Package OR the Full-Grade Package (7MSR) that includes this study. Should you have any questions about this issue, it would be our pleasure to serve you.
Sincerely,
Usborne Encyclopedia of World History (updated 4.3.13)
Usborne has updated this book for us under the new title Usborne Encyclopedia 12,000 Years of World History. The revision removed the first 100 pages (evolutionary content), and updates the cover. The rest of the content has not changed.
If a customer purchased the original encyclopedia with Core G last year, they do not need to purchase this revision. We have included the schedule for both the newer edition, and the older title, in the 2013 Core H schedule. Both are listed under History/Geography. The "older" edition schedule is printed in a lighter gray font.
- Core H updated schedule
- Internet Links The original title is an Internet Linked book. Our version is also internet linked. Since Usborne does not sell the 12,000 year title, it is not found on their quicklinks website. Customers can select the original title Usborne Encyclopedia of World History and find the links there. They will need to add "94" to the page numbers in their book. (9.19.14)
Why no formal research paper in Core H?
While there is no single, formal research paper in Core H, there are a number of writing assignments that require a student to use research skills.
標eek 11 - A Well-Researched Non-Research Paper
標eek 13 - A Revolutionary Paper
標eek 15 - Sick of Writing
標eeks 25-26 ... Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Read All About It!
標eek 29 ... Number the Stars (Biblical research)
Is Classic Poetry (from Core 3) too young for Core 7?
In response to customer feedback that the book brings the Core down in grade level, I don't think I agree. While my copy is packed in storage, it has Shakespeare and other famous poets (Keats? Browning? I don't remember). When it was in Core 3, I remember one comment specifically about it being too advanced, too philosophical, too cerebral. Third grade is a bit young for "All the world's a stage."
I would spin it as "Amy, just out of college, picked this book based on the merit of the poetry, and inserted it in 3rd grade in place of the previous, more age-appropriate, fun poetry book. After reviewing dozens of newer poetry collections, she has revamped the poetry selections several times in the last decade, and believes the current poetry collections are more aptly placed."
And for the individuals who have already read the poems, it probably wouldn't kill them to read Shakespeare again. There's worse things in life.
