Describe Level 7 through 200 LA 4.6.06

  • Formal grammar ends in LA 6.
  • If parents believe their child needs additional grammar or vocabulary instruction they can choose to use the optional grammar workbooks. [These items are scheduled in the Core IG. Without the Core IG parents can easily schedule the workbooks by dividing the number of lessons or pages by the number of days in their school year.]
  • In level 7 and up our Language Arts instruction focuses on literature, writing, and literary analysis. We focus on applying the grammatical knowledge they have learned.

Language Arts in Core 100 [updated 4.27.06]

140-00 still exists and it contains, as it indicates in the new catalog, only the following OPTIONAL workbooks: Analogies 1, Winston Grammar--Advanced, and Wordly Wise 3000 Book 5. As was true with the 240-00 optional workbook schedule last year, we will be posting a schedule online. The 140-00 schedule will no longer include the reader schedule, the dictation or the creative expression.

Formal grammar instruction ends in LA 6/LA Alt 6. If parents believe their child needs additional grammar (or vocabulary instruction), they can choose to use the optional grammar workbook (or vocabulary workbook).

Levels 7 and up Language Arts instruction focuses on literature, writing (applying the grammatical knowledge they have learned), and literary analysis.

As for what was incorporated into the new Core IG, the Reader Study Guide has become the Literature Study Guide. The Literature books (formerly Readers) are now scheduled in the Core IG. The Creative Expression assignments are now also located in the Core IG. In addition, the Creative Expression assignments are now more closely linked to the Literature books via the new focus on Literary Analysis. They will specifically be found at the end of the notes for the Literature book they're most closely related to (i.e., scheduled in the same week with) in the Literature Study Guide (not the Answer Key). Finally, as for the new focus on literary analysis, each Literature Book's study guide notes will feature literary analysis notes (and often questions with answers) at the beginning of the book's notes, as well as in a "Review" section at the end of the book's notes. Any provided answers will be in the Literature Study Guide Answer Key. If you want the full effect of the new literary analysis focus, you will need to buy the new Core IG, as buying only the Student Questions break-out piece will not provide many of the answers we have provided.

Requests for Activity Sheets for LA 7 and up

Have you considered using Winston Grammar Advanced for continued grammar study? Students who come up through our Language Arts program will already have a tremendous amount of grammar under their belts by the time they reach junior high. However, if your student *hasn't* used our Language Arts, you might find that LA 4-6 would be a great resource for teaching or reviewing grammar skills. By simply adjusting the Creative Writing to mesh with the literature your student is using, you would have a great grammar and writing program.
