EHE FAQ
Most frequently asked questions about the 2008 EHE and Core 5 IG:
- Do I need the 2008 World Book DVD in order to do the 2008 EHE? - No. While we do believe that the 2008 World Book DVD is an excellent product, you can successfully use the 2008 EHE with an older version of World Book.
- Can I make copies of the Student Worksheets found in EHE? - In a word, yes! EHE is a Sonlight product with all the usual Sonlight copyright rules and allowances.
- Where is the schedule for World Book? - In the 2008 Core 5 program we no longer schedule specific World Book articles. The World Book product is updated every year, which in the past meant that we had to update our Core 5 IG every year. By only scheduling the EHE, we no longer have to update the World Book schedule.
- Where is the schedule for the Eastern Hemisphere Explorer? - The 2008 EHE is scheduled in the Core 5 IG.
- Is it possible to use the 2008 EHE with an older Core 5 IG? - It is "possible". What it means practically is doing some math. Look at how many weeks are set aside for a particular country's study, then count the number of "exercises" (i.e. Journey Jots, Notable Names) and divide the exercises evenly across the number of days allotted.
- What do I need to purchase if I want the whole deal? No scheduling or work necessary on my part? -
- 2008 5TB
- #5H51 (which includes Answer Keys and Student Exploration pages)
- 2008 World Book Encyclopedia (if they don't already own a copy of World Book)
(10.16.08)
Are all the answers in WB? It is taking too long to use EHE, etc.
- From the EHE itself: Please don't feel restricted to using the World Book for all of your investigations. AND You may have to look in other sources to find the answer to some of these questions.
- To improve searching customers have made several suggestions (as WB search function isn't as effective as some):
- Control F - can search in your browser window for a specific word
- Copy and paste text to word processor program for easier searching.
- Some of the information may be found in the atlas or other WB tools, not just in articles. Using the internet as a research tool is also a fantastic idea. The research can be viewed as an opportunity to expand computer skills (where to look, etc.).
- Set a daily time limit - the goal isn't to finish every question, but to make progress learning about the country/culture and learning research skills. Twenty to forty-five minutes a day, depending on the student, is a good rule of thumb.
- Many of the questions require thinking skills - inferring an answer versus just 'finding' the words to put down on the line. This is a new skill for many at this age and may require more time than just 'fill in the blank'. Again - set a time limit.
- Let different age groups work together in the research - they can learn from each other.
- There may be too MUCH to do for some students. Don't feel you have to finish every question! Again, setting a time limit is a great protection against the 'fill in the blank' desire.
Search Smartly Answer Key
No answer key is provided in EHE for the Search Smartly exercise. It was assumed that the instructions walked students straight to the answer. However, we did decide to include the brief instructions in the Core 5 IG - Week 1, Page 2. (7.24.08)
- Search Smartly
- How did a clipper ship get its name? (Clipper ships were fast and slender ships, and the name “clipper” came from the way the ships “clipped off” the miles.)
- Ships built by trading companies for trips to the East Indies were called: (East Indiamen)
- In 1809, The Phoenix became the first steamship to make an ocean voyage. Name the engineer who built it. (John Stevens)
- Which type of ship was designed with more sails, a Span¬ish galleon, or the packet ship, The Flying Cloud? (The Flying Cloud)
Copyright Details (accurate for 2008)
EHE is a Sonlight product with all the usual Sonlight copyright rules and allowances. Sonlight copyright guidelines will allow for copying for the immediate family by the original purchaser only.
2008 EHE Details (5.21.08)
- EHE is no longer a single item in our warehouse. Because the student pages are printed in color, and the answer key is in black and white, we've turned item number 5H51 into a package composed of two pieces: #5H52 (Introduction and Student Exploration pages) and #5H53 (Answer Keys). Thus, customers who only need extra activity sheets can just order #5H52.
- The only item returning customers should *NOT* have to purchase is the World Book Encyclopedia. Here's why:
- Since this is a complete rewrite of everything, simply purchasing new Activity Sheets won't work because all of the answers and question organization has changed.
- Yes, this means: EHE is no longer dependent on the current year's version of World Book. added 5.27.08
- We still recommend World Book, as having reviewed numerous encylopedias we believe World Book is the best for clarity and child-friendliness. added 5.27.08
- Since we're no longer scheduling reading assignments from World Book, we've moved the schedule of EHE into the Core 5 IG schedule pages. Therefore, customers will need a new Core 5 IG in order to know which assignments to complete each day.
- Since this is a complete rewrite of everything, simply purchasing new Activity Sheets won't work because all of the answers and question organization has changed.
- We recommend that all customers purchase the following to have a complete "work done for you" product:
- 2008 5TB
- #5H51 (which includes Answer Keys and Student Exploration pages)
- 2008 World Book Encyclopedia (if they don't already own a copy of World Book)

Backorder date on EHE has changed
EHE backorder date has now been pushed to 7/1/08. The reason for this is that the decision has been made to print this product in color. That color printing process can take up to 4-6 weeks. We are planning to make a black/white version available to those who cannot wait for the color version to become available. We will be emailing those who currently have EHE on backorder and will offer them the black/white option along with a $5 coupon. More details to follow as this is nailed down (hopefully today). Please refer any frustrations to this change in backorder either to Rhonda (SCAs) or to Judy (others). 5.12.08
REVISED Update 5.19.08 Sonlight has made the decision to SNAIL MAIL out 5 weeks of the EHE on printed pages to all customers who have backordered the EHE through and including 5/11/08 (when we changed the backorder date on the web site). They will then receive the final color version along with all who ordered after the backorder date change. 5.16.08
Email to EHE customers on 5.13.08 - We will email all customers (on 5/13) who have EHE on backorder saying that the black and white version AND 5TB will start shipping on 5/20. Those who ordered EHE before we changed the backorder status page to 7/1/08 (orders through yesterday), will have the option to request the black and white version. Newer orders and those who do not respond with their request for b/w will receive the color version in early July (no exact date yet). 5TB will ship out on 5/20 to everyone with that item on backorder (we will not hold the IG until the color EHE is ready). We will include a coupon for $5 for all those customers mentioned above (with EHE on backorder prior to yesterday). 5.12.08

Dear {FIRSTNAME Friend}
Thank you for your recent order. We realize that you are waiting for your copy of the newly revised Eastern Hemisphere Explorer (EHE).
Our Product Development staff is just putting the finishing touches on the Eastern Hemisphere Explorer, which includes so many engaging new features that we decided to print it in color for the first time. We are confident that you and your student will love the new look and fresh new activities.
However, the color printing process does necessitate an additional 4 to 6 weeks for printing. The color version of EHE should be ready by early July. We are very sorry for this additional delay.
To see the samples of the new color version, go to sonlight.com/5H51.html.
If you can wait for this new and improved version of EHE, you don't need to do anything. Your backorders will ship to you as soon as we receive them from our printers; expected by early July.
If you would like to get started, we can send you a black and white version of the new EHE. Please let us know if you prefer the black and white version by replying to this email. Please include "EHE" in the subject line and we will ship the new EHE in black and white from Sonlight by May 20th.
Again, we apologize for this additional delay and whether you decide to wait for the engaging color version in early July or need to go with the black and white version in May, we want to offer $5 off your next order for your inconvenience. Simply include your coupon code {coupon code} in the coupon section when you place your next order. This coupon will expire on November 15, 2009.
If you have any questions about this update, or any other part of your Sonlight resources, don't hesitate to contact out Customer Relations team. We are available to help you at [email protected] or by phone at 303-730-6292.
Thank you for using Sonlight.
Sincerely, Peter Rouse
2008 EHE a HUGE shift in product design: (4.08)
We're not trying to test kids; we're trying to give them an understanding of their world. The traditional classroom approach (which is how EHE was structured in the past), frames questions--or problems--that force students to "find the [right] answer." The new EHE, by contrast, will give the basic information, and then ask, "Why is it important?"
So. A traditional school approach might include a question: "Name the 27 cities in the world whose metropolitan populations are 10 million or more." The new EHE, by contrast, would give a list of the cities and have kids mark them on the map with the expectation--and, almost assuredly, an assignment--to notice that, while Southern Asia across to Japan has 12 such cities, Australia has none; and Africa has only one. . .
Similarly: A traditional school (and Sonlight's EHE in past years) might include two lists: one including Dates, and the other, historical events. "Please draw a line to match the correct date to each event." Now Sonlight's EHE will provide students with a list of events and dates and ask something more along the lines of, "So why does this matter? Why is it important?
This year we have added overview studies of eight of the world's key religions or world philosophies. Students will study each one during their studies of a cultural group or area in which that religion or philosophy is particularly prevalent. Thus they will cover . . .
- Animism . . . in their study of Africa
- Confuciansim . . . China
- Buddhism . . . Southeast Asia
- Hinduism . . . India
- Islam . . . Middle East
- Judaism . . . Israel
- Shintoism . . . Japan
- Christianity . . . Pacific Islands
Love to Learn Guarantee - EHE and the EHE Student Activity sheets will continue to be covered under the L2L guarantee. (3.20.08)
EHE 2008 We expect this product to become available 5.1.08. (3.19.08)
2008 edition
1.18.08 We will not be selling the 2008 version of World Book (DVD version) and the 2008 edition of the EHE until April 1 (catalog release/launch date). This is different from previous years.
