Chemistry CD ROM

The "On Your Own" assignments are not numbered on the CD ROM like they are in the text. So the daily assignments may be somewhat confusing. For example ... Week 1/Day 4 reads Making Measurements through one "On Your Own". That would better read through a single or the next "On Your Own". The "On Your Own" assignment line for the text will be helpful for CD ROM users because it shows the number of "On Your Own" activities to be completed each day, even if they aren't numbered. Lye for some chem experiments In some locations, the Red Devil drain clearner that Apologia suggests for the experiments is no longer available. Lye apparently is used in making meth and thus can no longer be purchased in local stores. Sandy found Draino drain cleaner crystals at WalMart. It has sodium hydroxide as one of the ingredients and is exothermic so the beaker will get hot. It should work well as a substitute. (9.16.08)

Fuel for alcohol burner The alcohol burner included in the kit requires denatured alcohol, which can be purchased at a local hardware store. Our Chemistry Supplies Kit (ASK) does not include the fuel necessary to use the alcohol burner.

Details on Chemistry course Dr. Wile considers his chemistry course an Honors course. I noticed he has changed some of the experiments to include variety. I would definitely say that it would qualify for a lab science. Thankfully, the experiments are also geared for the home environment, which makes it more reasonable to tackle as a homeschooler. Dr. Wile says that Biology and Chemistry are requirements for the AP Biology and AP Chemistry course, so I would not jump into the AP Chemistry course without the foundation of the first chemistry course. Also, Algebra I is a prerequisite for the Chemistry course as it requires a good bit of math to complete the work.
