I usually start with "For High School you really need to decide first what credits your student will need for admission to the colleges they are interested in and/or for the degree they want to pursue. Then decide what cores to use for those credits." From there I discuss what they are using as a carnegie unit. Is it 120 hours? Then they can modify the core as long as they get the 120 hours credit's worth.

Personally, I think each of the cores easily contains enough to split into two years, with all the study resources and research potential. So far I have tailored high school for each of my students so I would say go for it! Check what the colleges expect for a music major for admission and go from there.
