  • it's actually one of our favorites. It's a beautiful book, well illustrated, and interesting. It brings up great discussions on why we don't believe this or that. Personally I consider it a *not-to-be-missed* book!
  • We have stricter views on this than most other families on here, so I will give you our opinion, and you can adapt it to fit yours.

Story #1. Title: Strong Magic, that alone is enough to make dh weak at the knees in giving to a 4 or 5 year old. Calls the boy a "lazy, good-for-nothing" which is a strong insult around here, language we don't use. Magic tress started to grow taller. he magically turned into a koala.

Story #2 Father wants daughter to marry a "fat and ugly" cruel man. Daughter had to hide from father to avoid getting married. Not so bad as far as stories go.

Story #3 Involves Zeus, a mythical greek god, Zeus gets upset with turtle and magically creates a shell for the turtle's back. I don't like reading to toddlers about mythical gods, much less ones that magically change animals or use other magic.

Story #4 Puss in Boots. You probably know the story. Involves lying and deceit to get what you want.

Story #5 Birds got pretty colors by draping themselves with snake skin left behind by multicolored snake.

Story #6 Magic in title, Polynesian god, used a magic fish hook to catch fish and accidentally pulled up an island out of the sea instead, andthe island split in two while they were fighting. Of course, the fighting created mountains and valleys and stuff. And that is how New Zealand was made.

Story #7 Familiar folk tale, OK

Story #8, magic emerald at the bottom of the well that grants wishes, a witch turned a girl into a bird because the girl wouldn't marry the witch's son, bird magically turned back into a girl

Story #9 snake charmer song, Ok, but I didn't like it

Story #10 Thor's Hammer, god of thunder, "horrible giant," Thor dresses up like a bride to get his hammer back

Story #11 OK story

Story #12 little dike boy, ok

Story #13, kind invisible jinns watching over baby while father was at work, otherwise OK.

Story #14 ivory wand brings wishes, man was happy as long as he had his wand, and when he got it back

Story #15 Nail soup, similar to Stone Soup stories

Story #16 First son is happy he is going to become a robber so he can steal and get rich, third son purchased glasses that could tell him what was going on all over the world, sea monster that looks like a dragon

Story #17, stealing the sun, title says it all

Story #18, about a witch, witch flies around in the air, kindness to animals helps save her, magic towel turns into a river, magic comb turns into thick forest,

Story #19, great story

Story #20 "Magic Doll" god Glooskap, magic doll does as commanded, magic doll moves a mountain, (wow, big faith issue here).

Story # 21 OK, but I don't like that kind of story all that much

Story # 22 stories about wizards "stories" are kept in a bag and want to get out so they can hurt the person who wouldn't let them out, can change into anything they want
