Apologia AP Biology & Chemistry

2019 Changes:

  • Science Advanced Biology 550: Fearfully and Wonderfully Made (550-13)
  • New Book Edition

Please note that we have recently begun to sell a new edition of Fearfully and Wonderfully Made that is scheduled in the Advanced Biology Schedule Plus. This new edition has a new preface and has been updated. Please click on the link below to download and print an updated schedule. (10/2019) 550-13 New Edition for PDF Download

  • Kaplan Anatomy Coloring Book 6th Edition #550-17 (4/17/18)

NOTE: practice cards in the back of the book on page 332 clarifies what each letter stands for but is:

  • O = Origin of the muscle
  • I = Insertion of the muscle (where it is)
  • A = the action
  • N = Name of the muscle

2014 Changes:

  • 550-20 Human Body Full Course discontinued (7/10/14)
  • 550-05 Science 550 CD ROM Package discontinued (7/10/14)
  • NOTE: Schedule Plus (550-01) is still fine as it is still compatible with the 2nd Edition Textbook (550-11 and package 550-00).
  • NOTE: There is a Curriculum Update for the discontinued Multimedia CD (550-21)

(9.11.13) - First four weeks of updated Schedule Plus now available on our Curriculum Updates page. Customers are directed to contact main@sonlight if they would like a full 36-week updated schedule.

We are working on an update for the Schedule Plus so customers can use it with either the 1st OR 2nd edition of the text. Once that is complete, we will mail it to customers who have purchased the 2nd edition textbook which we began shipping in mid-August.

  • Apologia Advanced Biology 2nd edition is now in our warehouse (items #550-11 and #550-12). The product pages are correctly labeled as 2nd edition. However, because the difference between 1st and 2nd editions is significant, we are going to have to update our Schedule Plus. Thus, the Advanced Biology "package" (#550-00) will only be available as long as we have 1st edition texts left (not many). Once we get the Schedule Plus updated, we will make the updated package available. No ETA yet. (7.31.13)
  • Apologia updating to 2nd edition, but not expected until late July. We will then review the new text to see if we need to update our Schedule Plus. It could be as much as 2-3 months before we have an updated Schedule Plus if it is required. (6.27.13)

AP Biology Schedule Plus Errors

Anatomy Coloring Book Updated Content (10.9.14)
Please note that we have added some information to Week 1 of the Advanced Biology Schedule Plus that clarifies how to use the Anatomy Coloring Book. We apologize for the confusion this has caused. (10/2014) We have scheduled the Anatomy Coloring Book as it is used in the textbook, The Human Body: Advanced Biology in Creation. While the textbook refers to exercises (ex. Exercise 1.1-1.3) the Anatomy Coloring Book does not use this numbering system. We have used both the exercise numbers and the page numbers for your reference.

Anatomy Coloring book: There is also a separate coloring book that is scheduled throughout the actual text. It is well marked when to do it. In fact, it is in a specially colored box within the modules that have something assigned. The coloring book is very important…not just a little side line.

Labs: Microscope Labs require a microscope and special prepared slides (slides included in package, microscope purchased separately - Sonlight Ultra Microscope, 250-40, is recommended). Dissection Labs include cow eye, sheep heart, and fetal pig

Prerequisites: Successful completion of first-year Biology program (250-00) and first-year Chemistry (350-00).

AP: Combined with Biology 250-00, this program gives the student the equivalent of a university biology course. Put another way: these two courses together cover the entire Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. The program covers both the anatomy and the physiology of the human body's 11 organ systems (including the reproductive system) in detail. Prerequisite: successful completion of first-year Biology program (250-00) and first-year Chemistry (350-00). Combined with Biology 250-00, this program gives the student the equivalent of a university biology course. Put another way: these two courses together cover the entire Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum

Details on Chemistry course

Dr. Wile considers his chemistry course an Honors course. I noticed he has changed some of the experiments to include variety. I would definitely say that it would qualify for a lab science. Thankfully, the experiments are also geared for the home environment, which makes it more reasonable to tackle as a homeschooler. Dr. Wile says that Biology and Chemistry are requirements for the AP Biology and AP Chemistry course, so I would not jump into the AP Chemistry course without the foundation of the first chemistry course. Also, Algebra I is a prerequisite for the Chemistry course as it requires a good bit of math to complete the work.

Does AP Chemistry need a mass scale? I just reviewed all of the experiments in the Advanced Chemistry book. None of them require a mass balance. All of the experiments are qualitative in nature, not quantitative. Freshman chemistry will be quantitative, as well it should be, but the lab portion of this course simply isn't written that way.
