2010 Apologia AP Biology & Chemistry
2010 Changes
- Apologia has now released 2nd edition of Advanced Chemistry. We still have a number of the 1st edition in the warehouse and plan to sell that stock before we order the 2nd edition. (6.14.10)
AP Biology Schedule Plus Errors
Updated information AP Biology 5.1.08
- The AP Biology Schedule Plus (550-01) is included in the AP Biology package.
- Our slide kit (550-15) includes two slides not included in the Apologia kit (bacteria from human intestine and human cerebellum). Four of the slides in our kit are not scheduled in the Schedule Plus. This is because we are only able to purchase this product as a kit from our vendor. We cannot remove slides.
- Our AP Biology Kit includes a blood typing kit. Web site description will be updated. (5.5.08)
Multimedia Companion CD - while we do carry the full course CD for AP Biology, we do not carry the companion CD (7.31.08)
Anatomy Coloring book: There is also a separate coloring book that is scheduled throughout the actual text. It is well marked when to do it. In fact, it is in a specially colored box within the modules that have something assigned. The coloring book is very important…not just a little side line.
Labs: Microscope Labs require a microscope and special prepared slides (slides included in package, microscope purchased separately - Sonlight Ultra Microscope, 250-40, is recommended). Dissection Labs include cow eye, sheep heart, and fetal pig
Schedule: A schedule was created for 2008.
Content: The program covers both the anatomy and the physiology of the human body's 11 organ systems in detail. The reproductive system is covered in detail, including frank (not pornographic) illustrations and descriptions.
Prerequisites: Successful completion of first-year Biology program (250-00) and first-year Chemistry (350-00).
AP: Combined with Biology 250-00, this program gives the student the equivalent of a university biology course. Put another way: these two courses together cover the entire Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. Details on Chemistry course
Dr. Wile considers his chemistry course an Honors course. I noticed he has changed some of the experiments to include variety. I would definitely say that it would qualify for a lab science. Thankfully, the experiments are also geared for the home environment, which makes it more reasonable to tackle as a homeschooler. Dr. Wile says that Biology and Chemistry are requirements for the AP Biology and AP Chemistry course, so I would not jump into the AP Chemistry course without the foundation of the first chemistry course. Also, Algebra I is a prerequisite for the Chemistry course as it requires a good bit of math to complete the work.
Does AP Chemistry need a mass scale? I just reviewed all of the experiments in the Advanced Chemistry book. None of them require a mass balance. All of the experiments are qualitative in nature, not quantitative. Freshman chemistry will be quantitative, as well it should be, but the lab portion of this course simply isn't written that way.
