Purchases: You MUST have used a minimum of four full Sonlight Curriculum Core programs purchased from Sonlight Curriculum, Ltd. We must be able to validate your purchase from our records and/or your proof of purchase. (NOTE: Core programs have gone by different names over the years. They include Basic, Core, Core Ultra™, Core Plus™ and First Time Curriculum Packages.). All such programs included a Core (or "Basic") Instructor’s Guide, plus Readers, Read-Alouds, and History programs for the same year or level. Many packages also included Bible programs.) For the purposes of this scholarship competition, Core purchases may be made either as a single package, or in pieces over time. However, if such purchases are made in pieces over time, the entire program must have been purchased in a period of no more than 12 months. If you purchased only pieces of a program and not the whole, or if you purchased the equivalent of a whole, but over a period of more than 12 months, such purchases will NOT count toward qualification for the scholarship competition.

By significantly greater weight [for those who use the high school levels], we mean that we will give a higher score on our evaluation to those students that have used Cores in the higher levels, as opposed to those that have not.
For example, if a student uses only Cores 7, 100, 200, and 300, they will receive a greater weight in our evaluation of use than a student that has used only Cores 1, 2, 3, and 4.
There is much less differentiation for those using different Cores at the higher levels than those using fewer Cores at the higher levels.
For example, we don't make such a large distinction between a student that used Cores 6, 7, 100, and 200 from a student that used Cores 7, 100, 300, and 400. They are all upper level Cores and all have merit as higher level Cores. We particularly make the distinction between those using Cores 1-6 versus those using Cores 7-530.
Our basis for this distinction has more to do with our thinking that we want to offer scholarships to those students going to college that have prepared themselves largely through the use of Sonlight, and college preparation is more closely linked to high school level courses than non-high school level courses.
As a reminder, we do have a person that initially reviews and scores our candidates independently, using the criteria we have created. He has done this now for about 4-5 years, and has a good sense of what we are evaluating.
Now regarding the number of candidates we review each year, the number has been between 20 and 40 thus far. Each year, the number of applications seems to grow a bit, and we trust we will have more and more over the coming years.
Finally, we have had excellent applications of all kinds the last several years. We are so grateful to see the lives and backgrounds of so many students as reflected in these applications. While not every student will be awarded a scholarship, every student that submits an application is a joy to us and an example of what families can do and achieve by learning at home. We are thankful for every application and every family that shares the lives of their students with us!
