Vocabulary Vine 5.16.05 Created: May 16, 2005, 13:45 Last Modified: December 26, 2006, 22:53

See the chart at http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/latinstart.htm . It suggests when to start, etc.

Vocabulary Vine is ideal for 4th - 9th graders. I tried to make it very open-ended so you can modify it to suit your needs. (Don't you hate curriculum that dictates how you MUST use it?) Remember, you know your family much better than I do! So if you want to give it a try, go for it. Like Vicky said, if it doesn't work this year, shelve it until next year.

Possible obstacles for a 2nd grader:

Writing & fine motor. They're doing so much writing already, I hate to add another writing task, especially in those skinny lines on an index card. Logic. Vine relies on logic for part of the study process, and those skills really kick in around early 4th grade. Yes, mom can bridge that gap by giving hints. But I wonder whether a 4th grader would get more out of Vine than a second grader because she's employing one more learning mode - logic - to retain the roots. Vocabulary. I strictly limited myself - no obscure example words in Vine (no diathermy or biunnal) so the student could rely on known words for clues and memory-joggers in learning the roots. Some of those example words may be familiar to an educated adult, but a stretch for a 4th grader and totally obscure to a 2nd grader because his vocabulary hasn't grown that far yet. Words like superlative, legislature, or resonate. So a 4th grader would again get more benefit from Vine. As you can see, these reasons don't rule out Vine for a 2nd grader, but you should weigh them in your decision.

Also see the last adaptation at http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/latinideas.htm#adap , the one from Julie in CA. I think something like that would be a wonderful way to introduce Vine with a younger child.
