Sound & Sense 2012 (currently selling 13th edition)

Sound & Sense 8.7.07 (currently selling 12th edition)

We recently began selling the 12th edition of Sound & Sense, but are still selling the 11th edition of the answer key. Those customers who were sent the 11th edition answer key will be sent the 12th edition once it is ready (hopefully in another week or so).

Sound & Sense 10.15.06 [currently selling 11th edition]

2006 edition IG: The letter found in section 1 that is to be read in week 1 is found prior to the schedule pages (which is section 2).

Page 3, section 1, 2nd full paragraph in column 2 --- refers to chapter on “Writing About Poetry” pages 291 – 329. In the current edition of Sound & Sense which we sell the pages are 301-340. May I suggest we remove the page numbers and tell the student to check the table of contents for the chapter (which is what I did to assist the customer in locating the chapter).

Changes from previous editions?

  • The Sound and Sense product changes fairly dramatically from edition to edition. I'm afraid I don't have an exact count of how many questions have changed, but I can tell you that each edition change brings with it significant updates ... use of different poems, etc... 7.09
  • 6.20.05 We are currently selling the 11th edition of the book and answer key. In terms of the changes to the book itself:
    • the description at the start of each chapter remains the same (Amy actually compared paragraph for paragraph, and perhaps about 2 paragraphs in the entire book changed).
    • The poems within the chapter move a bit, and the poems at the end of the book (perhaps 160 total) are very different book-to-book. Well, the classics remain, but the modern, lesser-known poems change.
    • Amy is not sure that the older books (9th edition and prior) contain the "writing about poetry" section that the new text has, and writing short essays on poetry is important for the AP test.
    • The answer key also has highlighted the most important questions for the AP test (which are most like the questions on the test). Since the poetry analysis is a large portion of the AP, the answer key is important for that reason as well.
    • Amy's advice: It is obviously better to have a book with matching answer key. Really, the answer keys cannot be switched book-to-book. However, if a SL customer has the 10th edition and has another student in a few years, they wouldn’t need the 11th edition, too. Just use the 10th edition with the matching answer key.

For customers with S&S numbers 1 through 9, I would recommend that they get the newest with answer key, though that is up to them (as are all purchases). If they are confident in their poetry analysis, they probably will do fine without the answer key.
