Saxon 3 Manipulatives
Balance: Sonlight's Saxon 3 manipulative kit does NOT include a balance. The current Saxon 3 edition (1994) states, in the list of materials, a balance is required. However, a balance is not listed as a necessary resource on any lesson. Saxon Customer Service states this is a typo in the book. Their current catalog does NOT list the balance as necessary, though their website does.
Outdoor Thermometer: The book calls for an outdoor thermometer and said it would be used throughout the year. Customer wondered if one was supposed to be included in manipulatives kit since it was apparently a very necessary part of that level. After looking at the list of what is in the manipulative kit in the catalog, I decided that it must not be part of it, but suggested that it probably wouldn't be very expensive to buy one and I was sure they were readily available. She agreed. Then... I happened to think that one was included in the NSK for Science. I asked her if she had that. She did. So she pulled it out and found the thermometer! She was so excited to not have to go out and get one.
K-3 kits contain:
- Teacher's Manual [daily lessons, pre-class preparation instructions, a list of needed materials, an entire scripted lesson];
- student workbooks - for 1 thru 3 only, no workbook for K [workbook includes practice pages, masters, and fact cards];
- NOTE: - fact cards are tucked into the student workbooks. They are shrink-wrapped in clear plastic and have a blank cover sheet over the cards. The cards themselves are printed on different colored card stock.
- Meeting book (used for daily opening exercise where students practice skills ranging from telling time and temperature to counting money and problem solving]. All Saxon K-3 materials are black and white. Meeting books are different for each level; one required per class at each level (i.e. 2 students using Saxon K could use the same meeting book; two students using different levels -- i.e. one in Saxon K and one in Saxon 2 -- need different meeting books)
- The Meeting Strip "masters" are located in the student consumable workbook. It doesn't specifically say "Meeting Strip" on the page, but there are 5 masters per page. It lists the student's name, Today's Date, Today's Pattern, Coin Cup, and Today's Problem. The bottom left of the page lists the page as 3-*R1Ma. Every 5 lessons there is a new master to use. - Meeting Book - primarily a calendar to keep track of student progress, but also includes worksheets to help kids practice skills. (7.11.13)
