Spelling Power CD-ROM for Mac? (9.8.11)
The Spelling Power CD ROM contains three components ... 1) Reproducible Forms 2) Searchable Word List, and 3) Spelling Power Digital Tutor.
- 1) We will provide you with a convenient source for all of the Reproducible Forms section that comes on the CD-ROM. Save the forms (only once) to your computer and then you have them for future use.
- 2) There is an alternate version of the Searchable word list for people with Macs. You can get this at the same time as you load your reproducible forms and masters.
- 3) The Digital Tutor does not work on a Mac and unfortunately never will. The Digital Tutor is not a major or integral part of the Spelling Power program. It does not replace the daily face-to-face testing that you do with your student(s). It is simply another drill activity that a student can do during the 5-minute Discovery Activity section of the spelling day.
- NOTE: If you have any further questions on using the CD-ROM with a Mac, please feel free to call us at our toll-free number 1-888-773-5586. And remember that you have lifetime use of the Spelling Power Help Line.

How to use Spelling Power
Spelling Power is a non-consumable spelling program for 3rd grade through high school. In this one large volume you will find placement tests, all the flow-word spelling lists, teaching instructions, hundreds of activity suggestions, and blackline masters for the suggested student pages. Sonlight does offer consumable record books (item # LSP1 for 1st through 3rd graders, #LSP2 for 2nd through 4th graders, #LSP3 for rth grade up), but if you have access to an inexpensive copier, the blackline masters will be sufficient.
Inside each of our Language Arts Instructor's guides we provide Spelling Power "Quick Start" instructions.
You will begin with the placement tests, found on pages 101 through 120. The placement test will tell you where to start in the 'flow-word lists'. Each day's lesson will take approximately 15 minutes.
The first 5 minutes you will teach the spelling/phonics rule for the group of words on which you are working. Then you read the word, say it in a sentence, then say the word again. The child then says the word to you. [This step allows you to catch many spelling errors!] The child then writes the word. If it is spelled wrong, they immediately cross it out and write it correctly. After 5 minutes, or having missed 5 words, the child moves on to the next step. For the next 5 minutes the child follows a 10 step process to learn the word. For the last 5 minutes, the child is to do an activity using the words. There are hundreds of activities listed for you in the manual, broken down into grade levels, subject areas, etc. The next day you begin with the words your child has missed.
