Adapting LA Information provided in the instructor's guides: (the following notice is included in all LA and Science IG’s that have Activity Sheets)
You do not have to do every question on the Activity Sheets. Feel free to adjust and/or omit Activities to meet the needs of your child(ren). We cover the same concepts repeatedly throughout the year (and years to come!) to enable students to learn "naturally" through repetition and practice over time.
Remember: This program is designed for you to use to meet your child(ren)’s needs. It is not meant to use you! I am hopeful that this might give our overly concerned mom’s permission to pick and choose Activities and pace the program for the benefit of their child(ren).
Can I start a core mid-year or do you need to start at week 1?
The phonics and language skills taught in the activity sheets build upon each other. Starting in the middle of a Language Arts program would be difficult for a student.
Instead, we recommend spending a day reviewing each week's materials before moving on to the next week's materials. If the student has mastered the phonics and been introduced to the other language skills in the activity sheet, then you could move on to the next week's materials. Move at your child's pace for this first year instead of focusing on lining up the LA and the Core.
Concepts Reviewed, not introduced
The concept was almost certainly covered in previous levels.
When discussing introducing concepts that are new to the student, we've been recommending the following: 'do those items that are review, then pick one or two 'new' concepts to cover. Utilize Writer's Inc. where needed. Don't feel you need to do all the questions. Set a time limit for the lesson and stop wherever you are when you reach that limit. Your child will make great strides by the end of the year!
