TWO-volumes ... Vol. 1 = "beginnings to the fifteenth century" (around 200 pgs) ... Vol. 2 "reformation to the present day" (around 250 pgs).

Volumes state that they integrate the history of the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox traditions.

Maps ... pencil illustrations ... highlighted info in call-out boxes ... lots and lots of text.

From "How to Use this Book" in the intro ... This book is in ten chapters of equal length. Each one consists partly of a continuous narrative describing events, institutions, etc., and partly of the documents which are the source of that particular story. These documents take the form of maps, charts, and above all texts on the period in question.

Some of the chapter titles in vol. 1 ... The Birth of the Church Christians in a Hostile World Being a Christian in the Early Centuries The Church in the Christian Empire

Some of the chapter titles in vol. 2 ... Renaissance and Reformation The Catholic Renewal The British and North American Experience the Evangelization of the World

These are history texts, pure and simple. I suppose the application for a missions-minded student is a better understanding of where the church has been.

  • My oldest used these volumes and said that they were interesting. He was amazed that he was reading the writings of church fathers from so long ago...and understanding them! For the older student, the volumes do "draw together" the various denominations. Kelly L
