Animal Kingdom Flow Chart - Notes for week 1 of Science 3 suggest that students make a flow chart to learn more about animal kingdoms. Many customers have complained that they don't know how to do this. We will provide a link to a sample Animal Kingdom Flow Chart on the Curriculum Updates page. (12.12.07)
10.2.07 - Discover & Do schedule does not match the TOPS experiments assigned for weeks 7, 8, 9 and 10. Updated schedule has been posted on Updates page.
2007 Edition - 5 day & 4 day price the same This is accurate. All books are used - either partial or in totality.
Coordinating old edition of Intro to Biology with current IG
No comparison chart is available. If they purchased the book from Sonlight then they most likely purchased the IG at the same time, so they should have an IG that includes a schedule for this book. We do list the edition date in the catalog so the customer should be aware the book was updated
Catalog Error - MSB Inside the Human Body is optional for 4-day [4.1.06]
Catalog - P. 48 The Magic School Bus Inside the Human Body (3S05) is a 5-day only title. The catalog description should have the same notation as the book above (Listening to Crickets): "(Optional for 4-day Science Program)" IG - Magic Schoolbus Inside the Human Body is supposed to be listed under "Optional" in the 4-day Book List (Section one, page 5). The Week 31 schedule page should also have an "Optional" notation for the book.
There is also an error in the 4-day Science IG that schedules this book as a regular part of the program. It should be listed as optional in the IG also.
If a customer notices the problem we can tell them they can skip the book.
TOPS books are non-consumable 4.1.06
Pg 48 .... TOPS books 38 and 39 are listed as consumable. These books are not consumable as reproduction rights are offered to the purchaser. The TOPS books on page 73 are listed correctly
Intro to Biology 1st ed schedule unavailable 7.26.04
We are not supporting either the CHOW older version nor the Intro to Biology.
The older version of Intro to Biology is not scheduled because the changes to the new book are so dynamic, we would like to encourage persons to purchase the newer one. It has been rewritten to be closer to a 3rd grade level with pictures included and the reviews have been much improved.
The 2003 edition of Intro to Biology is basically the old one but cleaned up - nicer quality pictures, better formatting, etc. Content-wise, the pages did change, one chapter about evolution from the old book was taken out, and an additional chapter was inserted that covers living things.
Brontosaurus picture [5.04]
Your book shows a picture of a brontosaurus on page 171 in the 2003 edition. However, many scientists now doubt if there ever really was a dinosaur called the brontosaurus. They think that other scientists invented this animal by putting fossils together that didn’t really belong. So why do we have a picture of a brontosaurus in our book if scientists think they never existed?
The reason your book uses a picture of a brontosaurus on this page is because almost everyone knows what a brontosaurus supposedly looked like and how big it was. You have probably seen pictures and fossils of brontosauruses in books and museums. And since most people know how big a brontosaurus supposedly was, it makes it much easier to compare its size to other large animals, like an elephant or a whale. The picture of large animals would be much harder to understand if we used a less familiar large dinosaur, like the Argentinosaurus. Since you have an idea how big a brontosaurus is it is easier to compare its size to other large animals.
Primary colors of light [5.04]
Science Encyclopedia is correct:
- Primary colors of light - red, blue, green
- Primary colors of pigment - magenta, cyan, yellow
An explanation can be found in the IG notes.
Mysteries and Marvels of Nature -- internet linked 4.04 The book is VERY different. It is internet linked (which sounds enticing) BUT has only 2/3 of the content of the previous book (which is very sad because is seems watered down to us). I wouldn't share these comments with customers though.
The 2003 IG includes Activity Sheets and scheduling that coordinates with the longer, more in-depth book. We invested significant time rescheduling, adding Listening to Crickets to fill out the schedule and creating revised Activity Sheets to coordinate with the new Mysteries and Marvels.
In short, I would not recommend trying to use the 2003 3TS with the new Mysteries and Marvels--and the old book is completely out of print.
