Horizons Teacher's Guide Editions 12.06

According to the publisher all of Horizons materials are being updated. Only the cover and some graphics have been changed, the content has not been altered. Older editions of the teacher's guide -- even the very old ones in binders -- are compatible with the current (2006) edition of the workbooks.

Horizons Manipulative Kits updated 3.07

There are NO changes to the 2007 manipulative kits from 2006. Sonlight is working on a potential solution, but there is no set completion date.

Horizons Manipulative Kit Fact Sheet.doc

One mom is asking if the counting by 1's flashcards are to be 1+1, 1+2, 1+3, etc. and how many to make. Also asking if she should put the answers on the back.

Adding by 1's means just that -- 1 + 1, 2 + 1, 3 + 1, 4+1, and so on. You would put the answers on the back like any other flashcard. The teacher's manuals do not have good directions, but it is fairly self explanatory.

Public school special ed teacher is considering Horizons math but sees in samples that there are Bible verses on some pages. How much religious content is there in Horizons?

The Bible verses are culturally significant ones, in my experience, like the ant and the sluggard. They call them 'maxims' because most are just wise sayings or 'proverbs', not necessarily Biblical proverbs.

3.2007 Update: There are NO changes to the 2007 manipulative kits from 2006. Sonlight is working on a potential solution, but there is no set completion date.

10.2006 In a nutshell ... while Horizons advertises itself as providing homeschool-friendly suggestions for math manipulatives, some of our customers are not finding that to be the case. So, in 2006 Sonlight chose to offer 'complete' math manipulative kits, at the cost of $56-$87 per kit.

We have been hearing from customers who are confused about how to use various items in the manipulative kits, as well as customers wondering why they have to create their own flashcards.

So ... Product Development is working on creating a document for each manipulative kit as well as potentially creating the flashcards. This is obviously a long-term project, so we are certain to do it 'right' the first time.

In the meantime ... if you have customers upset with the lack of correlation and instruction of their manipulatives kit, please reassign the ticket to the facilitator, the same as you handle any ticket from a customer who is dissatisfied. We will work with them to see what resolution we can provide as far as their product is concerned. Please also offer to answer any specific manipulatives question a customer might have. For example, if they truly don't know how to make tally mark flash cards, please offer some instruction.

Graph paper in Horizons 4:

The graph paper is 6/16" squares; metric graph paper. It is NOT the same as the coordinating graph paper sold individually.

Consumable student workbks - purchase for second student 4.1.06

Page 101: This page does not show the consumable student workbooks for each level. And the descriptive text does not mention them. The text does talk in a couple places about "reproducible worksheets" and the fact that you only have to purchase the program once to use with all your children. The "reproducible worksheets" are actually extra practice worksheets and have little to do with being able to use the program over again. The ability to use the program over again has everything to do with the student workbooks (for example #1M31 & #1M32). I believe this description is going to lead customers to believe they truly only have to buy this once when in reality they do have to purchase the consumable workbooks again.
