From the desk of John Holzmann
To our Sonlight friends, Sarita and I were genuinely excited to do this last year. We partnered with WORLD Magazine in offering our Sonlight family a complimentary (zero commitment) "Gift Subscription" to their magazine.
So many folks took us up on the offer, we've decided to do it again!
We're making it our gift to you. Why? First, because I love the value of getting eight complimentary issues of such a great news resource. So nice from a strictly economic view, wouldn't you agree?
But second (and, more importantly), because we like WORLD magazine so much. We're hoping you will come to appreciate it just as we do. WORLD is our "second" news magazine. We subscribe to The Economist and to WORLD. That's it for news magazines right now.
The only magazine I know that seeks to report today's news from a distinctly Biblical perspective… Yes, WORLD Magazine is culturally conservative and generally Republican in outlook. If your view is Democratic or Libertarian, you may find yourself occasionally frustrated by an apparent imbalance. I think you should know this up front.
However, WORLD truly does offer you an alternative voice on many issues of national and international concern.
Read their stories on major breaking news, and you'll realize they always have a different slant, somehow. Unlike more mainline news sources that seem to acquire information from upper-level spokespeople in government and other organizations, WORLD's sources seem a bit more "on the ground." Many are missionaries and church leaders who are and have been living or ministering in the area for longer periods of time. You'll get to understand the implications of events—natural disasters, international conflicts, and so forth—in ways you'd never otherwise understand them.
"Religious" news, too—it's not just for church leaders. Even more, WORLD Magazine covers issues of church-state relations, international missions, national and local ministries, and denominational "politics." This is news you're not going to hear about anywhere else—unless, perhaps, you're a pastor or seminary student who subscribes to periodicals for the "religious professional."
WORLD covers these issues for the rest of us. Beyond hard news, however, my personal favorite sections of the magazine include:
The brief "Quick Takes" human interest stories... "The Buzz" media reviews—movies, TV, and music... The in-depth special reports that seem to appear in every issue, and... The regular columns (almost always non-political) by Founding Editor Joel Belz, award-winning professor of journalism and Editor-in-Chief Marvin Olasky, and the always provocative commentator-on-life Andree Seu.
This 8-issue subscription to WORLD is our gift to you. Simply respond by 11/30/07. Yes, Sarita and I do greatly appreciate WORLD Magazine. And we'd love for you to check it out for yourself, with our thanks for your interest in Sonlight.
That's why we have arranged again with the publishers for you to receive this gift subscription. Respond by Friday, November 30th, 2007, and you will get eight issues of WORLD—compliments of Sarita, myself, and the entire staff here at Sonlight.
Please note: due to mailing costs, we can offer this gift subscription to new subscribers in the U.S. only.
At the end of your gift subscription, I hope you will want to keep receiving this excellent news magazine. If not, simply cancel your subscription. If you DO renew to a paid subscription, WORLD has promised to reduce their regular subscription price of $49.95 by 20%, to just $39.95 for a full year. That's very nearly 79% off the $189.50 you'd pay for a year of WORLD Magazine at the news stand…
Will you join Sarita and me in getting today's world news in a clear, Christ-focused light? WORLD Magazine has proven to be a very worthwhile investment for our family. To begin your gift subscription (8 complimentary issues), use any link in this message.
I've told you what I like about WORLD Magazine. I also like what they have to say for themselves. Here's something I excerpted from the "About Us" page on their website:
WORLD Magazine tries to be salt, not sugar.
We like to report good news but we don't make it sticky-sweet. We also report bad news because Christ's grace becomes most meaningful when we're aware of sin…
WORLD is dependent on God and independent of any political faction or interest group. We don't let advertisers influence news content. We don't print glorified press releases. We do criticize corruption, even when—sometimes especially when—it erupts among Christians.
We look for provocative and evocative news stories that are the result of pavement-pounding rather than thumb-sucking. We stand for factual accuracy and biblical objectivity, trying to see the world—as best we can—the way the Bible depicts it. Journalistic humility for us means trying to give God's perspective.
We also distinguish between journalism and propaganda: We're not willing to lie because someone thinks it will help God's cause.
WORLD covers all aspects of the news: national, international, and cultural; politics and business; medicine, science, technology, and sports. You’ll find feisty columns, religious reflections, and even a page with funny or strange stories of the week.
We believe that our purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever—and forever begins right now. We don't want you to read WORLD out of a sense of duty. We want you to enjoy the world God has made, full as it is of nooks and crannies and weirdness.
But what matters the most is this:
We believe in a God who tells the truth and wants us to do the same.
Whether you are just beginning your homeschool adventure, or you've been "Son-lit" for years… WORLD Magazine will, I believe, become not only a valuable source of information for your family, but also a wonderful (and constantly fresh) resource in your teaching "toolbox."
Thank you again for your interest in Sonlight Curriculum. Sarita and I both hope you will enjoy your WORLD Magazine gift subscription. And thanks for reading this Sonlight Email Alert!
Sincerely,
John Holzmann (for the two of us!) Co-owner of Sonlight Curriculum
