  • Teaching scripts in the early grades (especially for new to homeschooling parent/teachers)
  • Updates to many of the activity sheets
  • Updates to many of the assignments - to make sure all are a reasonable length
  • Evaluative rubrics to assist with evaluating student performance
  • After a big picture overview, the assignments progress in a logical order, starting with the simple and moving to the more complex. This applies both within each year and through the years as a whole.

Order of letters taught (10.20.09)

We start with the easiest letters to hear (for example, "f" is the first letter because its sound is unique and distinctive.) We add letters as they are "hearable (for example, b, s, t, and m)." We add some letters late in the year since they aren’t used often (q, x, z). And, we follow Dr. Beechick's idea of having kids read as soon as possible (since that is why we learn the letters in the first place--not for the head knowledge but to read). Therefore, we add the letter "A" in week six so that kids can start putting letters together into words. When we add a vowel to the progression of letter sounds, we pause in our push forward in learning letters since vowels enable us to read and can be somewhat tougher to hear. So, instead of a letter a week, we'll spend from 2 to 4 weeks on a vowel sound.
