Is SLC “theonomic” or “Reconstructionalist”?
John Holzmann, one of the developers of SLC has been intrigued by the research and writings of some of the men who use the terms “theonomy” and “reconstructionist”. John is not willing himself, nor is he willing for Sonlight to be known by either term.
With respect to some of the issues raised by people who are known by those names:
Sonlight absolutely advocates that every area of life – everything we do and every culture with which we come into contact – should be brought under the discipline of Christ (In 2 Co 10:5 Paul says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Sonlight teaches an optimistic view of the future, meaning, we expect that Christ’s kingdom will expand on earth through the faithfulness of His people blessed by God. We base this view on the promises of Christ that, for instance, “the gates of hell will not prevail against His church” (MT 16:18) and the passage in Daniel (ch 2) that talks about the rock cut out “not by human hands” that will smash all the kingdoms of this world and grow to fill the whole earth. (See also Rev. 5:9, “With your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation”), Rev. 11:15 (“the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever”), 1 Cor. 15:24-25, etc.
