Content of Sarita's email on homeschooling with special needs 2.10.10

I have to confess: I haven't worked with children with "special needs." However, many of our customers do. And when I read their stories, I thank God for these loving, caring parents who take such great care of their children!

Buffi wrote recently about her son PJ:

My 10-year-old son has moderate Cerebral Palsy. Last year while reading Johnny Tremain (from Sonlight Core 3), PJ realized something wonderful about himself and God's plans for all of us. In the book, Johnny burns his hand and is no longer able to learn his trade. Throughout the book, Johnny realizes that even with a crippled hand there are things he can do and accomplish to help aid the revolution. He becomes an important part of the "information highway" in Boston prior to the beginning of the American Revolution.
Although we have told him many times that God has a plan for him and a path for him to follow, PJ made the connection after this book.
After reading all of the things that this young man was able to do after losing his trade and the importance his part played, PJ made the connection that even with his disability, he can do important things. It was a wonderful day and has uplifted PJ in many ways. He now looks for things that he can do and is more willing to try.
Sometimes more than history lessons come out of the wonderful books that you have chosen. . . .

If you are teaching special needs children, I want you to be encouraged. You can succeed at homeschooling.

I'd like to recommend two wonderful resources for parents of children with "Special Needs"--whether they face learning challenges or are exceptionally fast learners.

For children with Learning Challenges, check out the Sonlight Curriculum Learning Challenges forum.

And for Accelerated Learners: the Sonlight Curriculum Accelerated Learners forum.

Both are part of the massive Sonlight Curriculum forum community.
