Both Usborne and Dorling Kindersley are secular publishers. Their books (Usborne’s more than DK’s) do contain occasional references to evolution or evolutionary concepts. They also contain positive references to Christianity and its influence throughout the world. Some pictures in the history and geography texts show men and women who are underdressed by western standards. We believe these pictures have been placed in the books in order to accurately portray the way the various peoples live(d).

Though some parents choose to avoid the whole issue of evolution and/or to add ‘clothes’ to some pictures, we believe our responsibility as parents is to teach our children discernment. That is one of the reasons we home school: we want to teach our children by example. So, rather than ignoring the few shortcomings of these books, we believe we should use them as opportunities to teach our children the truth.

When a book presents evidence for evolution, we need to discuss the weaknesses in such a position. When we believe our children are being unduly influenced to think a sensual lifestyle is appropriate, we need to share with them the reasons we have come to a different conviction. Please note that, in almost every subject and at all grade levels, we have included commentary in our instructor’s guides, and/or outside texts to help you and your child think through both sides of questionable theories and practices.
