Q?: My child tested beyond level 4 on the QRA now what do I do about choosing Readers?

Congratulations! Your child is reading very well. It is important to keep in mind that the Quick Reading Assessment only measures a child's ability to decode words. Other aspects of Language Arts are not measured, and typically a child's "language arts ability" is closer to actual age/grade level than their "reading ability".

Our Language Arts programs are included in our Cores and use our Readers as the basis for study. For this reason, it is best to choose Readers based upon your child's "Language Arts ability". The Quick Reading Assessment was the first step. The next step is to request free three-week samples of our Language Arts Instructor's Guides for the levels that you believe may best suit your child. You may do that here: http://www.sonlight.com/samples.html

These samples will arrive in your email and you may print them out for your convenience. Please read over these samples. You may even want to try out a few Activity Sheets with your child. Based upon what you know about your child and how they fare with the Activity Sheets you should be able to choose the appropriate Language Arts level needed. Then, order the Readers that correspond to your child's Language Arts level. If your child's reading level is above his Language Arts level, supplementing with library books [to keep him challenged] is also an option. As always, if you still have questions or would just like to talk over the choices with an Advisor, we are here to help you make the best choice for your child.
