Dear Customer,
If you are a U.S. citizen or
resident, I hope you will join our family in celebrating the privileges
we enjoy in this country.* These privileges are largely results of the
sacrifices the U.S. founding fathers made long before and after that
fateful 4th of July 235 years ago.
It was on that day in July that
"Representatives of the United States of America, in General
Congress," boldly declared, that "these United Colonies are,
and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States," no longer
bound to Great Britain or to its king. Striving to make reality match
their words, that band of men "mutually pledge[d] to each other
[their] Lives, [their] Fortunes and [their] sacred Honor."
As you celebrate, you might want to
take a look at the first four sections of the Wikipedia
article about the Declaration (from "Background" to
"Text"). As you read, consider gathering the kids to discuss
the wording of the Declaration itself and/or some other issues that
strike your heart and mind. Or, if you own a copy, you could open
Genevieve Foster's George
Washington's World and read pages 168-189 out loud. Foster
tells the story of the founding of the United States in gripping prose
and helps us understand why participants felt as they did.
What are you thankful for as a US citizen or
resident today?
Blessings to you and yours ... and
through you, to many others,
Sarita Holzmann
President
