Dear Customer,
Do you want a homeschool program
that includes hands-on learning?
What if I told you that Sonlight
offers more hands-on activities than nearly any of our competitors?
That our activities are developmentally appropriate and tie directly
into learning? Here's a look at the activities we include:

Hands-on Preschool Programs
Our preschool
programs overflow with simple suggestions that coordinate with
your reading and help your children's development. For example, in Core
P3/4, after reading Blueberries
for Sal, we suggest you find a metal baking tray or a tin
pail from your kitchen, drop various items into it, and listen. See if
your children can figure out which objects make each sound. Activities
like this are easy, fun, and they help your children grow.

"I love how much
rich content and how many ideas Sonlight packs into their curriculum
choices and Instructor's Guides,"
writes Marsha E of Tacoma, WA. "I like to feel like our schooling
is full and we can leave some things out, rather than feel like we've done
everything but we're missing out. I love having tips and ideas in the
Instructor's Guide ... like this (complete with illustrated
instructions, thank you Sonlight!). The newspaper hats were fun to make
and even more fun to wear!"

Cores A through E: Supplemental Activities
Cores A through E each come with a
handy "Core Tips" CD-ROM that includes weekly suggestions for
extra activities to enhance learning. These suggestions help you add a
little more to your studies when your kids are particularly interested in
a topic. You can enjoy a recipe for "Egyptian Palace bread"
when you're studying Egypt, print out coloring pages to go with your
daily Bible reading, do a fun observation study on a cricket after you
read A Cricket in
Times Square, watch fascinating video clips, and play
relevant games. We provide more ideas than you'll ever have time for, so
just pick and choose what looks like fun.
Activities in Science and Math
Sonlight's Science
programs are loaded with hands-on activities and
experiments. We even include supplies and a demonstration
DVD, so you're more likely to actually do those exciting
experiments! We also emphasize hands-on learning and manipulatives in
the early elementary Math programs.

So there you have it: We know that
hands-on activities are a huge help to many children. They're fun. They
help learning stick. And so Sonlight is full of hands-on activities that
tie directly to learning.
BUT ... these activities are never
the main thrust of the curriculum. They're more of an optional,
child-directed, supplemental tool. Sonlight's programs revolve around
great books,
not hands-on activities. Click to learn
more about our philosophy about hands-on activities.
We believe that books—especially
Sonlight books—help fill children's minds with challenging ideas and lots
of inspiration. Kids then initiate their own hands-on activities—from
role-play games, to preparing a recipe, to building a medieval castle from
legos. And they carry out those activities primarily with their own
initiative and energy. Ever seen what kids will do with a cardboard box?
Or a stick? Children already have great imaginations. Let's give them
inspiration and let them run with it.

Sonlight's books
encourage kids to pursue their interests and start worthy projects on
their own. Yvonne F of Dumas, TX
wrote: "After reading books like Moccasin
Trail in Core E, the
children became interested in making their own bows and arrows."
Dad helped them in their quest for the perfect bow, and they all
learned about archery skills and safety. "It gave them the perfect
opportunity to work together on something they all had an interest in,
and their smiles made for the perfect homeschool moment for our
family!" Emma (13), Kenton (11) and Stephanie (9) are in their
sixth year of Sonlight.

So even though we offer plenty of
hands-on activities when you want them ... and even though you can find
nearly endless ideas for additional activities on the Sonlight
Forums ... these endeavors are not the center of your Sonlight
experience.
The center of your Sonlight
experience will always be teaching, reading with, guiding, and enjoying
your children. We do the legwork behind the scenes so you have the tools
you need to do that. You get to open up your Instructor's Guide each day,
grab your books and love learning with your children!
Wishing you the best this homeschool
year,
